Jeremy Meyer – Pan Pacific Junior Championships, Guam Traralgon swimmer, Jeremy Meyer has won 2 medals and broken 5 records at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Guam. 17 year old Meyer is one of only 5 Victorians in the 32 member “Australian Dolphin” team. Swimmers from the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Australia competed in the 5 day championships. Jeremy, a Gippsland Academy and Victorian Institute of Sport Scholarship holder, won a bronze medal in the 200m Breaststroke swimming a new Out of Gippsland Open record time of 2:17.42. Jeremy swam an outstanding race and was touched out for silver by only .42. Earlier in the week, Jeremy swam in the 100m breaststroke swimming a heat time of 1:03.89 – a new Victorian (held since 1987), Victorian Country and Out of Gippsland (17 years/over & Open) record. In the final he swam 1.04.00 – Finishing 4th by only 0.12. In the Boys 4 x 100m medley relay, Jeremy swam the breaststroke leg helping the team to a silver medal finish behind New Zealand. The delegation was led by Australia’s National Head Coach Alan Thompson who steered Australia to a 20-medal haul at last year’s Olympics in Beijing. Thompson sees the Pan Pacs as a potential stepping stone to the Olympics. “The Junior Pan Pac meets from 2005 and 2007 have seen 13 swimmers, including 2008 Olympic gold medalists Stephanie Rice, Bronte Barratt and Angie Bainbridge, graduate to the Olympic team so you can see it is the breeding ground for the future.” Thompson said. Jeremy has followed up his success at the Pan Pacific Championships with a 10 day training session at the AIS in Canberra – joining former Traralgon team mate and Olympic Silver medalist, Ashley Delaney. He will return to Traralgon in time for the Victorian Country Championships which will be held in Sale over the long weekend in January. The Traralgon Club is hoping for its 9th victory in 10 years at the Country event. |
