State Age Report Four Traralgon Swimming Club Girls have swam their way to an Australian Record at the Victorian State Championships.Erin Roberts, Georgia Tsebelis, Taylah Da Ros and Maggie O'Keefe competed in the 14 years 4 x 50 Freestyle Relay and broke the existing record by 0.76 with an outstanding display of team work, changeovers and effort. Erin lead out the first 50 metres in 27.65 - a new PB which really set up the rest of the girls. Georgia swam second and is now the first girl ever from Gippsland to go under the 26 second mark in a relay with a 25.71 - an awesome swim! Taylah was third and swam beautifully with a 27.10, a fantastic split which left Maggie to come home fast as she always does in 26.20 - a total time of 1.46.71 against the previous record of 1.47.47. Senior Head Coach, Brian Ford was full of praise for the team -" These 4 girls swam at Nationals in April and picked up a silver medal missing the Victorian record by 0.07 and the Australian record by 2 seconds. Between April and now we have challenged all of our girls 14 years and under to make the A team and after an extremely competitive period of training and racing the same 4 girls from April were again selected to compete. The record is a testament to the fierce but spirited competition between the girls, the support of their team mates and the terrific work of the coaches in achieving the desired result. We are very proud of our Australian Record." The record capped off the most successful State Championships ever by the by the Traralgon Club with 5th place overall in the State behind the 4 most powerful Clubs in the State - Melbourne Vicentre, Nunawading, Casey Tigersharks and Surrey Park. The Club's 47 swimmers brought home 7 Gold, 16 Silver and 10 Bronze medals competing in 81 finals with 1 Australian, 2 Allcomer, 2 Victorian, 8 Country and 24 Gippsland records. 13 year old Annie Pepper was the most successful with 1 Gold in the 200 Medley, 5 silver and 2 Country records in the 100 Back (1.06.38) breaking fellow Traralgon swimmer Georgia Tsebelis' previous time and 100 Fly (1.05.04). 11 year old Alex Tsebelis was outstanding in his age group winning 2 gold in the 100 Back and 200 Free together with 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. 11 year old Ellodie Reid caused a surprise in the 200 Free when she came from her 15th seed position to win Gold with a 10 second personal best (2.24.94) and then back up the next day winning bronze in the 100 Free. 15 year old Brayden Haney caused the boilover in his age group winning the 200 Breast (2.28.79) in a well controlled and paced race highlighting skill and technique. Lily Collins (16) raced hard and was rewarded with 2 silver (100 and 200 Breast) and 1 bronze (50 Free) medal. Vice Captains Maggie O'Keefe and Georgia Tsebelis were outstanding representatives of the Club - Maggie won 2 silver in the 50 Free (26.94) and 100 Free (58.64) breaking a Gippsland record in the latter and Georgia also breaking records with her silver in the 100 Back (1.06.30) despite sickness. Fellow Girls captain Erin Roberts (13) was impressive winning silver in the 200 Breast and bronzes in the 50 Free and 100 Breast. Taylah da Ros, also 13, won silver in the 50 Free and first time medal winner Jordan Arthur (15) was swimming fast over the meet also winning silver in the 50 Free (25.12). Traralgon's
powerful relay combinations were again at the forefront with 2 Gold, 2
Silver and 3 Bronze medals. As well as winning the Free relay the 14
year old girls team also won the Medley in a
new Country and Gippsland record (2.02.16) with Mikaela Cornelissen
producing a 28.64 Fly leg together with Georgia Tsebelis (Back), Erin
Roberts (Breast) and Maggie O'Keefe (free).
The B team of Annie Pepper, Jessica Norwood, Taylah Da Ros and Bridie
O'Keefe nearly pulled off a 1 - 2 finish just missing 2nd by 0.07 but
still getting a bronze medal, a similar position they
obtained in Free relay. The girls 12 year old team of Bridie O'Keefe, Jasmine Doultree, Ellodie Reid and Kaylee Beecroft picked up a well fought bronze medal and the 16/18 year teams which included Lily Collins, Annie Pepper, Georgia Tsebelis and Maggie O'Keefe won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. Again Coach Ford was well pleased - " This is the best result the Club has ever achieved. We have never scored over 1,000 points at this meet and to finish with 1,065 shows the depth of talent and hard working swimmers we have at the Club. The girls were outstanding finishing 3rd in Victoria in the points score and the Boys finished 8th with both teams finishing as top in Country Victoria. All in all a great result for the tremendous effort put in by the swimmers, coaches, parents and support crew over a demanding 6 days of swimming." The Club now sets its sights on the Victorian Country Championships in Bendigo from the 21 -23 January, 2011. It is seeking its 12th win from 13 Championships since 2000 and will have up to 90 members racing to uphold its position as the Top Swimming Club in Country Victoria.
